Another former Tottenham Hotspur player could join the Bayern Munich ranks with Steven Bergwijn’s agent refusing to ‘deny’ the interest of the Bundesliga giants in the £25 million Ajax captain.

This time last week, if we had told you that one of Harry Kane’s former Spurs team-mates was going to join he and Eric Dier at the Allianz Arena, you would have been forgiven for assuming that Newcastle United had accepted Bayern Munich’s latest bid for Kieran Trippier.

It’s not the experienced right-back who could be on his way to Bavaria before tomorrow’s transfer deadline, however, but a forward who left Tottenham Hotspur to the tune of £25 million as recently as 18 months ago.

Another former Tottenham player heading to Bayern Munich?

Steven Bergwijn struggled to nail down a starting berth under Jose Mourinho or Antonio Conte in North London. He has also underwhelmed, for the most part, since returning to the Netherlands with Ajax in the summer of 2022.

There will be eyebrows raised aplenty, then, should Kane and Dier find themselves welcoming another familiar face into the all-star cast of FC Hollywood.

“I can’t deny that,” was the response of Bergwijn’s agent, Nathan van Kooperen, when asked by De Telegraaf about Bayern’s interest.

German giants linked with Ajax swoop

Bayern’s interest comes after Kingsley Coman – their injury-prone winger – was ruled out yet again. The Frenchman has torn his knee ligaments. The German giants have already agreed a deal to bring in Bryan Zaragoza from Granada, but it seems that his arrival will have to wait until the summer with the Spaniard’s struggling against the tide in a fierce La Liga relegation battle.

Bergwijn did indicate that he expects to stay at Ajax for the time being, however. Though, like with Eric Dier, an unexpected opportunity could change everything.

“I have a contract until 2027, so (staying at Ajax) makes sense,” Bergwijn tells Voetbal International.

“But of course, in football, you never know what can happen. I’m only 26, so of course you keep all options open. One day I would like to play in the Premier League again. I think that remains the best competition.

“I also had a very nice time there, at Tottenham.”
