Social media has the habit of giving breathing space to pure stupidity, and with Jurgen Klopp announcing that he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, that door has opened again.

When the news broke on Friday, it took many by surprise because the German’s contract wasn’t going to expire until 2026 and nobody expected him to leave early.

As you can imagine, when the confirmation came through, Jurgen Klopp, understandably so, got plaudits left, right and centre for the job he has done at Liverpool…and it could yet get better!

But Paul Merson was sure to defend the 56-year-old from suggestions that he isn’t a Liverpool legend, yes, you heard that right!

It was put to the Sky Sports pundit on Twitter that he has won ‘one league title’, so he can’t be a Liverpool legend.

When the former Borussia Dortmund coach moved to Merseyside, the club had gone nearly three decades without a league title and he ended that.

Added to that, he also secured Champions League glory and won the lot during his time at the club…and there is every chance they go again before he bows out.

Well, Paul Merson was quick to shut that supporter down by, not just pointing out that he has done ‘great things’, but also stating that you just need to ‘ask the fans what they think of him’.

Jurgen Klopp to leave Liverpool

“Klopp done great things at Liverpool,” responded Merson. “Ask the fans what they think of him.”

Next Liverpool manager?

Given that Bayer Leverkusen are sitting top of the Bundesliga and they have a great chance of ending Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance, then it was obvious that ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso was going to be the first name mentioned.

Well, here we are, with sources telling HITC Football that the Spanish coach is on Liverpool’s list.

Whilst the Anfield faithful would have had a small eye on the goings-on in Germany’s top tier this season, you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be tuning in week in and week out now.

If Alonso delivers that title, and it would be Leverkusen’s first-ever, then it will probably just lead to the inevitable happening.
