Liverpool have announced that Jurgen Klopp has decided to leave his position as the Reds’ manager at the end of this season after nine years in charge at Anfield.

The Merseyside outfit released an official statement on Friday morning that Klopp has called time on his tenure. He took over from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015 for a first taste of the Premier League. Klopp has since guided Liverpool to trophies at home and in Europe.

Klopp has informed the Anfield hierarchy that he wishes to leave Liverpool at the end of this season. The 56-year-old will remain in charge for the rest of the campaign and take the Reds to Wembley in the Carabao Cup final. Several members of Klopp’s coaching staff will also go.

Assistant Liverpool manager Pep Lijnders has also opted to leave Anfield to pursue a career of his own as a manager. Fellow assistant coach Peter Krawietz plus elite development coach Vitor Matos will also vacate their positions when the current season comes to its conclusion.

Klopp has so far overseen 464 games since taking over Liverpool mid-season in 2015 for his return to management. The German had chosen to stay out of work since June of that year after leaving Borussia Dortmund. He has since won six titles in charge at the Reds – so far.

Liverpool won the first trophy of Klopp’s tenure with the Champions League in 2018/19. The Reds then sealed their first top-flight title in 30 years with the 2019/20 Premier League title. He also won an EFL Cup and FA Cup double in 2021/22, plus the 2022 Community Shield.

What has Jurgen Klopp said about his decision to leave Liverpool?

Klopp has won 288 of his 464 matches in charge of Liverpool to date, along with claiming 96 draws to 80 defeats, over all competitions. The Reds have also scored 1,025 goals so far to only 516 conceded. He has a win percentage of 62% and is unbeaten in 82% of his matches.

Speaking with the official Liverpool website about his decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, Klopp says he has opted to announce his departure now to offer the Anfield team clarity at the earliest opportunity. The Reds will now start their search for a new boss.

“I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment when you hear it for the first time,” Klopp said. “I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff.

“I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take. It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy.

“I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point. But I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.”
