Three words are proving to be a pain in the backside for Newcastle United – Financial Fair Play.

Sources have told HITC Football that Bayern Munich are keen to sign Kieran Trippier this month, with Newcastle United open to letting him go, but they have since said no after an initial approach.

It is understood that the player himself would be open to a transfer to Munich where he would re-unite with his England teammates, Harry Kane and the recently-signed, Eric Dier.

From a valuation point of view, Tim Sherwood made it clear that there is no point in letting Kieran Trippier go, and instead, he thinks Newcastle should sell Bruno Guimaraes if they need to ease any FFP issues, as he told Sky Sports News (20/01/24 at 2:25 pm).

Given that Kieran Trippier is 33, you’re not exactly going to get top dollar for the right-back, even though he is an important player for club and country.

Whereas 26-year-old midfielder Bruno Guimaraes could fit into the mould of inflated and overpriced midfield players in the transfer market today.

It seems as though any midfield player on note automatically has a £100 million price tag on his head, and if players from Moises Caicedo to Declan Rice can go for that price, then why can’t Newcastle’s popular star?

Yes, Tim Sherwood acknowledged that the club wouldn’t want to lose him, but if they had to choose, then he thinks it should be Bruno Guimaraes.

Will Kieran Trippier join Bayern Munich?

“I don’t think he would go,” said Sherwood. “Why would you let him go because he isn’t going to bring you a lot of money.

“They are going to need to sell players. They are going to need to sell Bruno Guimaraes or an Isak.

“They don’t want to lose any of them, but what are Bayern going to pay for Kieran? It’s going to be nothing really in the scheme of things. It’s not going to help their financial fair play situation, so they need to be selling Guimaraes.

“I wouldn’t sell this boy. He is a leader. A top, top draw player. Even though he makes mistakes, you know that he is a genuine character.”

Kieran Trippier away from the pitch

Yes, the England star’s form has hit a brick wall in recent weeks, but he has done enough for the club to allow him to get through this.

There is young Tino Livramento in the background who can replace Trippier straightaway, but that’s on the pitch only.

If Trippier were to leave, then it could be argued that he would be mostly missed away from the pitch because of his experience and leadership skills.

It was no surprise that, as soon as the ex-Atletico Madrid man entered the building at St James’ Park, the club’s form started to change for the better.
