Alejo Veliz has joined Tottenham Hotspur’s walking wounded with Ange Postecoglou bemoaning the ‘fairly significant injury’ the striker suffered just days after scoring his first Premier League goal.

If anything summed up Tottenham’s current fortune – or a lack thereof – it was this.

Alejo Veliz, the £13 million summer signing from Rosario Central, opened his top-flight account with a consolation in the 4-2 beating by Brighton and Hove Albion. But, if he had hoped to build on that well-taken finish on the South Coast, he would be disappointed.

Veliz limped out of the 3-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth just three days later, with Postecoglou now confirming that the Argentine marksman has become Spurs’ latest long-term injury absence.

Tottenham striker Alejo Veliz out for months

If we were you Ange, we’d recommend finding your nearest florist and buying the biggest bouquet you can find before leaving them on the doorstep of Lady Luck. Clearly, she’s not too happy with you.

“Unfortunately, Alejo was a fairly significant injury,” Postecoglou sighs, speaking to Football London

“He had scans. (The injury) will keep him out for a couple of months. (But he) won’t need surgery.

Postecoglou had some mixed news about Tottenham’s other treatment table regulars. Micky van de Ven, absent since that bizarre encounter with London rivals Chelsea in early November, is back in training. But Cristian Romero and James Maddison are facing longer spells out of the team.

Spurs’ injury issues continue

“Micky van de Ven has trained with us. He’s been involved for three sessions,” Postecoglou added ahead of Friday night’s FA Cup third round clash with Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Not sure about tomorrow and whether he’ll be involved or not.

“(Maddison) is not training with us yet. As I say, I won’t know until he’s back with in training with us and how he’s getting on. Cristian is still at the early stages (of own his recovery).”

Veliz, if things had been different, may have been readying himself for only a second ever Tottenham start with Postecoglou expected to shuffle his pack for the visit of Burnley.
