Hajduk Split are in contact with Tottenham Hotspur regarding a potential return to Croatia for Premier League veteran Ivan Perisic, according to the club’s sporting director Mindaugas Nikolicius.

When the veteran winger ruptured his ACL in September, it was tempting to wonder if that would serve to scupper his chances of a return to where it all began.

Fortunately for Ivan Perisic, a Hajduk homecoming is still very much on the cards.

Nikolicius, speaking to Sport Sport, insists that the option for Perisic to re-join the club where he began his career nearly 20 years ago remains. The Croatian transfer window is due to stay open until February 15th, and Hajduk Split will give Perisic every chance to prove his fitness before retracing his footsteps and heads back to a side he left back in 2006 without making a single first-team appearance.

Ivan Perisic likely to leave Tottenham in 2024

“We have a good team. We will try to upgrade it in the transition window,” Nikolicius explains. “We’re growing, progressing and have high expectations.”

“We want to score a lot of goals, (so) we need attacking players.

“Ivan is injured. It’s too early (to see if a deal is possible). We have to see when he recovers, when he is able to run and play. The transfer window here lasts until the middle of February, and that is an advantage for us.

“There is a dialogue with Tottenham, and we will make the best decision for everyone.”

Contract expires in July

Perisic, once of Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund, joined Tottenham from Inter Milan on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, reuniting with Antonio Conte after winning a Serie A title under the Italian at the San Siro.

Nikolicius said back in August that Perisic ‘would like to play for Hajduk’. And, with his Spurs contract expiring in July, his ambitions could yet be fulfilled, providing a player on the verge of his 35th birthday still has something to offer after such a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
