There has been a lot of debate about Arsenal’s goalkeeping situation this season.

Why has Mikel Arteta dropped Aaron Ramsdale? Was it the right call to make David Raya Arsenal’s number one?

All of those topics can be debated from dawn till dusk, and in truth, the real answer will only be revealed when the last ball is kicked in May.

But Arsenal’s decision to part ways with Matt Turner in the summer was a masterstroke after he produced another disasterclass for Nottingham Forest

Gary Neville branded the USMNT international’s display against Manchester United a ‘scandal’ and how he is ‘useless’ with the ball at his feet, as he told Sky Sports.

Yes, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side secured all three points. But Matt Turner did very well to nearly cost his team the points.

The 29-year-old’s abject passing out from the back gifted Marcus Rashford with an equaliser in the second half, before his teammate Morgan Gibbs-White bailed him out with the winner.

But regardless of the result, the American is someone who now has to do a lot to win over Gary Neville.

Matt Turner at Nottingham Forest

“I have no sympathy for him whatsoever,” said Neville. “It’s absolutely ridiculous. He is useless with his feet.

“The ball is put back to him at a decent pace, just put your foot through it – It’s a scandal from that goalkeeper. I know I am quite critical of goalkeepers, but what the hell are you doing? You have made that many mistakes with the ball at your feet.”

Arsenal goalkeepers

You could write a book on this. Arteta has had many players don the gloves and nearly everyone has gone on to do well for themselves.

World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, now sitting second in the Premier League table with Aston Villa, is one of them.

Then there is Bernd Leno, who after joining Fulham last summer, was probably Marco Silva’s best player last season and one of the best keepers in the league.

In the meanwhile, some Arsenal fans are still uneasy with the fact that Raya is the club’s new number one and not Ramsdale.

The issue is that the fans haven’t yet seen what differences Raya has made since his loan move from Brentford.
