Kalvin Phillips has now made his stance on a transfer to Newcastle United in January clear to Manchester City and manager Pep Guardiola ahead of the mid-season sales.
The 28-year-old is likely to be among the big-name players on the move next month. Phillips has endured another campaign on the bench for Manchester City so far this term. Guardiola has only fielded the midfielder 10 times for a combined 318 minutes across all competitions.
Just 89 of Phillips’ minutes have also come during Premier League games, with four outings to date. He has also not started a top-flight fixture in 2023/24. The England international has only opened one Champions League tie and started in a 1-0 Carabao Cup loss at Newcastle.

Kalvin Phillips has told Manchester City he wants to join Newcastle
So, TEAMtalk now reports that Phillips has made his desire to join Newcastle in the January transfer window clear to Manchester City and Guardiola. The 31-cap anchor has left Etihad Stadium chiefs with zero doubts regarding his intentions to sign for the Magpies next month.
Manchester City will not block Phillips from leaving in January, as well, but are struggling to agree terms with Newcastle. The Premier League rivals are locking horns over the structure of his move to St James’. Manchester City are urging the Toon to accept an obligation to buy.

Newcastle are mainly only striving to sign Phillips on loan for the rest of the 2023/24 season in January. Tyneside chiefs are open to including an option to buy the £165k-a-week anchor, who Guardiola has called ‘exceptional’, next summer at a push. But a dry loan is their target.
Newcastle remain in talks with Manchester City about his transfer
Talks remain ongoing over the deal to take Phillips to Newcastle in January after he cleared the path. TEAMtalk adds that Juventus still retain some interest in his transfer but are not a contender currently. So, Manchester City are seeing if they can agree a move with the Toon.
The purchase clause is likely now the only aspect holding up a deal as Phillips is Newcastle’s top midfield target. So, Eddie Howe will no doubt hope the transfer saga does not roll on for too much longer. He will no doubt also hope Phillip is match-fit after a season on the bench.
