Nottingham Forest have joined the race to sign Hoffenheim’s Bundesliga striker Maximilian Beier with Premier League giants Liverpool ‘not sure’ about a potential £30 million January deal.

There is no doubting the striker’s talent, or his potential.

But, at the age of 21 and with only a few months of regular first-team football under his belt, is Maximilian Beier really ready to make the step up from Hoffenheim to Liverpool? That, it seems, is where the doubts arise, German reporter Christian Falk telling Caught Offside that the Anfield giants have reservations about triggering Beier’s sizeable release clause

“I heard that Liverpool are still monitoring Maximilian Beier. He’s got a release clause of over 32.5 million euros,” Falk explains. “I heard Liverpool are watching him but they’re not sure whether he would help them immediately.”

Brighton, Brentford and Nottingham Forest are also in the race, while Everton have been linked too. Brighton, in particular, can boast a superb track record when it comes to signing young, unproven players and giving them a platform to perform, with Beier a candidate to follow in the footsteps of Evan Ferguson, Moises Caicedo, Simon Adingra and co.

A typical Brighton signing

“I think Brighton’s interest is comparatively more concrete (than Liverpool’s),” Falk adds. “And there’s interest from Brentford and Nottingham Forest on top of that.

“(Beier) can play on the flanks as well as centrally. He’s done it already. It’s a little bit like Thomas Muller in the sense that he’s not exactly a winger or central striker. He can also play behind the number nine, so he’s quite a versatile footballer.

“He’s very, very fast as well, so that would suit Liverpool. But he’s not the first choice.”

Beier has six goals and four assists in 16 Bundesliga matches this season. Liverpool may prefer a more experienced, readymade addition in attack, however, with Darwin Nunez extending his recent goal drought beyond a tenth game during Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United
