Anfield hero names the ‘super’ £12m Prem ace he’d love Liverpool to sign

Former Anfield ace Danny Murphy named Ezri Konsa when asked which Aston Villa player he would love to sign for Premier League giants Liverpool. 

This often-underrated central defender is used to living his life in the shadows.  

During Aston Villa’s first season back in the big time, much of the attention was placed on Tyrone Mings despite Ezri Konsa being arguably the more consistent of the two. And, amid all the praise coming the way of John McGinn, Ollie Watkins, Emi Martinez, Leon Bailey and co during a stunning run of form under Unai Emery, the pristine performances of Konsa are once again going under the radar. 

Murphy, however, is one of those who has taken note of the as-yet uncapped Englishman.  

In fact, when asked on the Vibe with Five podcast which Aston Villa player he would personally chauffeur all the way up Merseyside, the former Liverpool midfielder chose Konsa ahead of Watkins, McGinn or another player he rates highly, Jacob Ramsey.

“Ramsey is my favourite player there. He’s really good,” says Murphy, an FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup wnner at Anfield back in 2001. “But, from a defensive point of view, who has improved and I couldn’t see (him becoming so good) is Konsa.  

“How cool is he? He’s a super athlete. Good on the ball. He’s calm, and one-on-one he’s cool.”

Konsa, a £12 million signing from Brentford, has added another string to his bow under Emery too. The 26-year-old centre-half has excelled at right-back in recent games, producing stellar displays in an unfamiliar role in statement victories over Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Arsenal.

“There were very, very few opportunities, if any, for (Erling) Haaland,” former Scotland international Pat Nevin told the Football Daily podcast after Villa no sot much ‘cooked’ Pep Guardiola’s City but deep-fried them and served them up on a skewer. 

“Certainly in the second half, absolutely not a sniff (for Haaland). He was up against players on great form. That includes Pau Torres, Pau was absolutely magnificent at the back. Maybe second only to Ezri Konsa who was very, very, very special as well.”
