Tottenham Hotspur sold ‘one of the most reliable defenders in Europe’ with Villarreal’s former Premier League misfit Juan Foyth now a £46 million target for the likes of Juventus.

Unfortunately for the Argentina international, his time at Tottenham Hotspur coincided with the days of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. And with Spurs boasting arguably the finest centre-back partnership in England during much of the Mauricio Pochettino era, Juan Foyth barely got a got luck in following his 2017 arrival from Estudiantes.

And if Pochettino’s sacking was supposed to open a door for Foyth, the subsequent appointment of Jose Mourinho slammed it shut once again. Despite his claims to the contrary, Mourinho has never been one to throw unproven youngsters in at the deep end, and Foyth’s eventual departure came as no surprise when Villarreal agreed a £13 million deal with the London giants.

Juan Foyth has shone since leaving Tottenham Hotspur

Foyth, during three years in Spain, has come on leaps and bounds.

So much so that the likes of Barcelona and Juventus have been credited with an interest, the 25-year-old’s agent convinced that his client is one of the continent’s finest defenders these days.

“Without a doubt, Juan is one of the most reliable defenders in Europe today,” Claudio Curti tells Sport Italia, highlighting the tactical versatility which would have seen Foyth come in very handy under current Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou.

“He knows how to play three roles excellently. He’s a very complete player and a serious professional. He could easily play in Serie A and show his qualities.

“(A January move is not) impossible. There is always the release clause (standing at £46 million). But, in any case, we can talk about it with Villarreal.”

A World Cup winner with Argentina

Foyth was a member of Lionel Scaloni’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are looking to bring a new defender to North London in the winter window with the likes of Sebastian Cacares, Malick Thiaw and Japan international Koki Machida linked

Postecoglou has already enjoyed real joy when bringing Japanese players to Britain, Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate a huge part of his Celtic success.
