As if things couldn’t get worse for Manchester United, they now have to travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool.
Dumped out of Europe. Beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth in their last Premier League game. Captain Bruno Fernandes is suspended. And injuries galore.
Manchester United fans better close their eyes when watching this one because, after Liverpool’s 7-0 win last season, things could get ugly again on Sunday.
Peter Schmeichel certainly isn’t looking forward to the game, as he expressed his concern with Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw possibly expected to miss the Merseyside trip, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (12/12/23 at 10:10 pm).
Both players went off injured as Manchester United sleepwalked to a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday and, not only just bowed out of the Champions League, but Europe altogether.
Lisandro Martinez is already a long-term absentee for Erik ten Hag’s side, so it will be interesting to see what type of backline will start against free-scoring Liverpool.
Put it this way, it’s going to be makeshift and, as a result, Peter Schmeichel thinks the ‘prospects are not very good’.
Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw injuries
“Everything seems out of sync, I have to be honest,” said Schmeichel about Man United’s most-recent performance. “Of course, you have Harry Maguire coming off with an injury. Luke Shaw came off with an injury.
“I think we got Liverpool on Sunday. I’m trying not to think about that. It’s going to be without our captain, without possibly our best player of the last month or so, Harry Maguire. It’s going to be without Luke Shaw if he is injured.
“The prospects are not very good. Based on this performance, how can this team go to Anfield and win? I just can’t see it.”

Liverpool sitting top of the Premier League table
To make matters worse for Man United, their old rivals are sitting top of the Premier League table and looking like they could win the title this season.
By the time the Reds kick off on Sunday afternoon, there is a chance that Arsenal, who kick off hours before, could leapfrog them and sit top of the tree.
So, Klopp and Co. will want their spot back when they lock horns with Man United, which just makes matters worse.
Only Liverpool and high-flying Aston Villa have a 100% record on home soil this term.
And unless pigs start to fly, the Reds will maintain that record by the time the final whistle is blown on Sunday afternoon at Anfield.
