Newcastle United are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris following a major injury to stopper Nick Pope.

The Magpies beat Manchester United 1-0 last weekend but suffered a major blow in the process.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope picked up a serious shoulder injury and is now looking at around four to five months on the sidelines.

Martin Dubravka is stepping up in Pope’s place but the 3-0 defeat to Everton on Thursday night may leave some fans concerned.

Newcastle have already been linked with David De Gea but could turn to another veteran stopper…

Newcastle United keen on Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris

The Mirror now report that Newcastle are back in the hunt for Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The Frenchman has given more than 10 years of service to Tottenham having arrived from Lyon for £12million back in 2012.

Lloris has been phased out now though with Guglielmo Vicario becoming Tottenham’s first-choice stopper.

Out of contract at the end of the season, Lloris needs to leave Tottenham and Newcastle could offer an escape route.

It’s stated that the Newcastle hierarchy rate Lloris highly and they could launch a move having failed to sign Lloris on deadline day.

The report states that Lloris ‘politely declined’ a move to Newcastle on deadline day given that he probably would have been backing up Pope.

This was first mentioned by The Times as they suggested that Lloris had rejected a move to St James’ Park despite him having no future at Tottenham.

Lloris hasn’t played a single minute for Tottenham this season and a move to Newcastle may seem a little more appealing now.

Ironically, the last time Lloris played a game was Tottenham’s embarrassing 6-1 defeat at Newcastle in April.

The Frenchman would surely have the chance to play regularly for Newcastle until Pope returns, which has to be better than being in the wilderness at Tottenham.

Taking over the 36-year-old’s contract, meaning he would still be able to leave as a free agent in the summer, could work for all parties but Newcastle will need Lloris to change his stance win a move to Tyneside.
