Sunderland are likely to look abroad for a Tony Mowbray replacement with the likes of Nathan Jones, John Eustace and Neil Warnock unlikely to get the gig at the Championship outfit.

With a host of ‘proven’ second tier operators available in the here and now, casual observers may be somewhat surprised to learn that Sunderland appear to have little interest in hiring the likes of Nathan Jones – who built the foundations for Luton Town’s success – or John Eustace, so harshly sacked by Birmingham City a few weeks back.

Ditto Neil Warnock. The safest of all ‘safe pair of hands’.

Sunderland sack manager Tony Mowbray

But those who kept a close eye on Sunderland over the summer – when a number of potential Mowbray replacements had been lined up – will not be quite so taken aback by The i News‘ claims, owner Kyriel Louis-Dreyfus and sporting director Kristjaan Speakmen casting their net far and wide.

Sunderland, per talkSPORT, were eyeing Francesco Farioli and Matthias Jaissle in the off-season. 34-year-old Farioli may be coming into the mainstream after a superb start to life at Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Nice but, when the Black Cats came calling, he was a little-known, out-of-work tactician with only Fatih Karagumruk and Alanyaspor on his CV.

Jaissle, only a few months older than Farioli at 35, would have arrived at the Stadium of Light with two Austrian Bundesliga titles under his belt. But, in truth, its harder to find someone who has not succeeded at the helm of a dominant Red Bull Salzburg outfit.

Who will be the new Black Cats boss?

A few months on, Mowbray paying the price for a poor run of two wins in nine, the ship appears to have sailed as far as Farioli and Jaissle are concerned. The former is only just getting started in France, leading the revolt on PSG’s throne. The latter, meanwhile, is in the Middle East with Al-Ahli these days.

But with The i News reporting that Sunderland will look abroad for Mowbray’s successor, you can expect a handful of forward-thinking, 30-something tacticians to enter the frame in the coming days or weeks.
