Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier appreciates that boss Ange Postecoglou has been very open with him about his diminished role this season.

Ange Postecoglou has left Eric Dier under no illusions about his role at Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Dier was an unused substitute on Sunday afternoon as Tottenham lost 2-1 at home to Aston Villa.

Postecoglou left Dier out despite both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven being ruled out through suspension and injury respectively.

Emerson Royal and Ben Davies – full backs by trade – lined up as centre backs but couldn’t prevent a home defeat.

Eric Dier appreciative of Ange Postecoglou honesty

That should probably be the biggest indication yet that Dier’s long-term future lies away from Tottenham Hotspur.

Dier came on against Chelsea and started against Wolverhampton Wanderers but was back on the bench against Villa.

The Daily Mail now claim that boss Postecoglou has been ‘entirely honest’ with Dier about his role in the Tottenham squad.

Postecoglou deploys a high line and Dier just isn’t suited to that approach.

The 29-year-old is though appreciative that Postecoglou has been honest with him rather than stringing him along.

Dier surely on his way out in 2024

Dier is out of contract at the end of the season and we can’t see Tottenham pushing for him to stay.

Spurs need to add defensive depth and will surely target players who suit Postecoglou’s approach in terms of the athletic profile required.

Dier just isn’t the right player and whilst he did a job against Chelsea and Wolves, it’s clear that Postecoglou wants a different type of player in the heart of his defence.

Maybe that will lead to Dier moving on in January; Jose Mourinho’s Roma and former club Sporting are understood to be interested.

Tottenham will have to find a new centre back of their own in order for Dier to leave, but it sounds like the former England ace knows his days are numbered.
