Tottenham Hotspur considered signing Jonathan David to replace Harry Kane but the Lille striker is now struggling.

Jonathan David is suffering something of a goal drought with Lille after being linked to Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham had a big decision to make after selling Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

Was signing another centre forward the right option or would Tottenham go in a different direction?

Replacing Kane was never going to be easy but Tottenham went down the route of signing a versatile, speedy forward in Brennan Johnson.

That means Son Heung-min is now playing up top, but Tottenham may look to land a striker in 2024.

Jonathan David on Tottenham Hotspur radar

90Min reported in August that Tottenham were keen on Lille striker Jonathan David as Kane was finalising his move to Bayern.

It was suggested that Tottenham representatives had made contact over a potential deal for the Canadian.

Spurs went for Johnson instead but the interest in David certainly made sense.

David hit 24 goals in 37 Ligue 1 games last season and seemed ready for a big move away from Lille.

Tottenham may still be keeping tabs on David, but it’s not exactly going well for him this season…

David enduring goal drought for Lille

David has now scored just twice in 12 Ligue 1 games this season and he has now gone 10 games without a goal in all competitions.

The 23-year-old has only recorded one goal involvement in this time, registering an assist against Brest in October.

David has even been left on the bench in some games of late, which seemed almost unthinkable just a few months ago.

Boss Paulo Fonseca doesn’t seem too worried and has told Tuttomercatoweb that he still thinks David will probably leave in the near future, backing him to shine in Italy or England.

If David wants a big move in 2024, he really needs to find his goalscoring boots again and prove that he really can replace Kane at Tottenham – or Spurs will certainly move on.
