Newcastle United are now ‘very interested’ in signing Ederson from Serie A outfit Atalanta as the Premier League giants look to offset the loss of the suspended Sandro Tonali.

Eddie Howe and co may be keen to fight off those wanting to block Newcastle United’s pursuit of Ruben NevesThe Athletic say that a prospective move from one PIF-funded club to another is unlikely to go down too well elsewhere in the Premier League – and reports coming out of Italy suggest that contingency plans are already being drawn up.

Teun Koopmeiners, meanwhile, is not the only potential Neves alternative in the Atalanta squad. According to Tuttomercatoweb, Newcastle are now looking at Koopmeiners’ La Dea team-mate Atalanta. The Magpies are ‘very interested in signing’ the Brazilian, who’s £35 million price-tag likely makes him a little more affordable than the former AZ Alkmaar captain.

Atalanta, the report adds, are reluctant to let Ederson go for anything less than a ‘crazy’ fee. Then again, as Manchester United proved over the summer when signing Rasmus Hojlund, every player in Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad has their price.

And a price of £35 million is unlikely to have a club of Newcastle’s ambition and financial muscle running for the hills.

24-year-old Ederson won Atalanta’s Player of the Month award for October. He took his tally for the season to five goals on Sunday too, scoring a late equaliser against Udinese.

Sandro Tonali replacement?

“(Ederson is on a) growing journey. An extraordinary boy, on and off the pitch,” Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi tells Sky Italia. “His performances speak for him. We are happy with what he is doing. The club has made a great investment and we need to be patient.

“Last year, he already played well but this year even more so.”

Ederson joined Atalanta from Salernitana in 2022 for a fee of around £10 million.
