Ian Wright says Bruno Guimaraes should have been sent off during Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.
It was an action-packed first half with many controversial moments, only for the most controversial moment to come in the second half when Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United scored through Anthony Gordon – Ian Wright argued with ex-referee Dermot Gallagher about that call.
But Bruno Guimaraes’ elbow on Jorginho didn’t please Ian Wright because he thought he tried to ‘hurt’ the Arsenal midfielder, as he told Premier League Productions (04/11/23 at 6:30 pm).
Whilst Bruno Guimaraes was lucky that he wasn’t sent off, those in Newcastle colours would point towards a certain Kai Havertz.
The Arsenal summer signing’s reckless challenge in the first half resulted in him picking up a yellow card, but the reaction of many inside St James’ Park was that he should have been sent off.
So, whilst one man was lucky in black and white, things were made even with Kai Havertz, as Wright shared his thoughts on Bruno Guimaraes.
Bruno Guimaraes elbow on Jorginho
“There is no reason for him to be challenging Jorginho like this,” said Wright. “Look how away he is. The ball has gone. His arm doesn’t need to be up.
“I can’t understand why that isn’t a yellow card and they aren’t looking at that. He is trying to hurt him there.
“You know something that could easily be given as a red card. There is no reason for his arm to be there. What’s he doing? His intention is to hurt him. It’s not like it’s a challenge and your arm has flailed. The ball has gone, he has no reason to do that. None!
“He is lucky that he hasn’t caught him in the temple or something. It’s a bad challenge.”

Newcastle beat Arsenal
The Toon Army faithful won’t care one jot because this is a big three points in their quest to finish in the Champions League places again.
Even with those three points, they are still three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, who have a game in hand and play Luton Town on Sunday.
There is still a long way to go and whilst some question if the Magpies can cope with the Premier League and the Champions League, they are sending out a different signal altogether.
Even with a few injuries within their team, they are still securing all three points against one of the best teams in the Premier League.
