Chelsea want to sign Valentin Barco and will now try to tempt him into rejecting a move to Manchester City in 2024.

Manchester City now face something of a hijack attempt with Chelsea rivalling them for the signing of Boca Juniors ace Valentin Barco.

That is according to a report from 90Min, who claim that Chelsea are now stepping up their chase of Barco.

Chelsea lost to Brentford on Saturday afternoon and the Blues may simply look to spend more and more in 2024.

Chelsea have already spent over £1billion in the Todd Boehly era but still can’t get it right – and more signings could come soon.

Chelsea readying push for Manchester City target Valentin Barco

One player Chelsea want is Boca Juniors talent Valentin Barco.

90Min claim that Chelsea are now ramping up their pursuit of Barco in the hope of beating Manchester City to his signature.

It’s stated that City are favourite to sign Barco as things stand.

However, Chelsea are preparing a real push to try and change Barco’s mind and bring him to West London.

The report claims that Barco has an £8million release clause in his contract, with Boca so far failing to agree a new deal which removes that clause.

Barco and Boca won’t want to discuss a transfer before the Copa Libertadores final against Fluminense next weekend.

My view: Barco move may push Ian Maatsen out of Chelsea

Barco is a very talented young left back and he has already bagged one goal and three assists in 30 Boca games.

A Chelsea move would mean spending even more money on the left position after the signing of Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella in recent years.

Maybe Barco would be one for the future, a player who would even go out on loan to Strasbourg for first-team action.

Yet if Chelsea go and sign a young left back, they will surely push Ian Maatsen another step closer to the exit door.

The Dutchman has barely featured this season despite shining on loan at Burnley last season.

City are understood to be keen on Maatsen, so they could move for him if Chelsea win the Barco race.

Regardless, Maatsen surely needs to move on in order to play regularly elsewhere and a move for another left back may only cement a decision to leave.
