Paul Merson has suggested that Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is ‘underrated’ amid renewed links with a move to Arsenal.

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz played a vital role in Sunday’s thumping 4-1 home win over West Ham United.

Villa have been rampant at home of late and were at it again on Sunday with Luiz opening the scoring.

The Brazilian added a second from the spot before Jarrod Bowen pulled one back for the Hammers.

Villa found two more goals though as Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey wrapped up a convincing win for Unai Emery’s side.

Paul Merson praises Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

Luiz now has five goals in just nine Premier League games this season, proving to be a real threat from midfield.

The 25-year-old is playing outstandingly under Emery but maybe without the hype of Watkins or Moussa Diaby.

Former Villa ace Paul Merson has now taken to Twitter to offer Luiz some well-deserved praise.

Merson suggested that Luiz simply has to be one of the most underrated Premier League players right now.

“Douglas Luiz got to be one of the most underrated players in the league,” said Merson, clearly impressed with what he is seeing from the former Manchester City talent.

Arsenal still interested in Luiz

Luiz is currently playing for one of Merson’s former clubs but is still wanted by another in Arsenal.

Edu and Mikel Arteta appear to be huge fans of Luiz having really pushed to sign him back in 2022.

Sky Sports reported that Arsenal made three bids for Luiz, worth £20million, £23million and £25million – but Villa stood firm.

Reports in July of this year noted that Arsenal remain keen and we are now seeing the rumours pop up once again.

90Min reported on Monday that Arsenal remain keen on signing Luiz as they look to add another midfielder in 2024.

Villa won’t encourage any move but Merson may well see his beloved Arsenal make a new bid for Luiz in January.
