David Moyes was left rueing an ‘unbelievable’ Nick Pope save as the Newcastle United goalkeeper saved his team from defeat in the dying seconds of Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw at West Ham.

It was one of those special kind of saves. One which not only kept out the initial effort, but also prevented a tap-in on the follow-up.

As Nick Pope brilliantly tipped a Jarrod Bowen effort wide of goal, Newcastle United’s number one also made sure that the ball did not drop at the feet of a sprawling Said Benrahma. A couple of milimetres closer to the West Ham forward, and Eddie Howe’s side would have been following up that PSG hammering with a real reality-checking, back-down-to-earth-with-a-bump defeat at the London Stadium.

Nick Pope saves Newcastle at West Ham

“(Bowen) has signed a new deal. He has done amazing since he has been here, (and) continues to improve,” Moyes says, via the Shields Gazette. “Even today, Pope makes an unbelievable save with his hands which could have just changed the game at the end.”

Moyes was still pleased with a point however. Mohammed Kudus’ first Premier League strike – drilled home with fierce accuracy from the edge of the box – cancelling out an Alexander Isak brace in the 89th minute before Pope performed miracles befitting of his surname.

“Thrilled with a point,” Moyes adds. “Up against a really good team who are probably as good as most teams in Europe at the moment. Great point for us.

“We nearly won it in the end. Newcastle played well and we didn’t give them too many opportunities. We had a few ourselves. For us, I’m pleased that we got a point here.”

The result means West Ham stay one place and one point ahead of Newcastle in the Premier League table. The Hammers have lost only two of their first eight games so far in 2023/24.
