Cesc Fabregas says Bruno Guimaraes was lucky not to get sent off during Newcastle United’s 2-2 draw at West Ham United.

Already on a yellow card, the Newcastle United midfielder stopped James Ward-Prowse in his tracks, with the on-field referee Peter Bankes issuing a foul for West Ham United, but no yellow card.

At the time, West Ham United were leading 1-0, as Cesc Fabregas agreed that Bruno Guimaraes was ‘very lucky’ not to get sent off, as he told Premier League Productions (08/10/23 at 3:00 pm).

That call had a big bearing on the game because the Magpies would then go on to score two goals in the second half via Alexander Isak to take the lead.

Yes, West Ham would equalise late in the second half through Mohammed Kudus, but it shouldn’t have come to that.

VAR couldn’t get involved because it was a yellow card offence, not a red, so the criticism, for those who are annoyed, should be aimed at the on-field referee.

Should Bruno Guimaraes have been sent off?

“He was very lucky to still be on the pitch,” said Fabregas. “As a player when we go through this. You see straight away it’s a yellow. Second one and he is off.

“As a player, you know straight away when you make this tackle. And he shouldn’t have complained. I think he felt it himself.”

Onto the international break

Both teams were in Europe this week and both did their jobs by recording wins, with Newcastle’s being the most impressive because they thrashed PSG in the Champions League.

Either way, heading into another international break, both will be happy with where their teams are at.

It has been a tough opening few months for both, given the teams they are playing, with West Ham sitting in seventh on 14 points, whilst Newcastle are eighth on 13 points.
