Graeme Souness thinks Liverpool now have a ‘silky’ star in their ranks following their move to sign Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig during the summer transfer market.

The 22-year-old arrived at Anfield in a £60m deal in July as Jurgen Klopp bid to refresh his engine room. Szoboszlai had shown immense creative abilities in the Bundesliga through 30 months in Germany. He left Die Roten Bullen on 20 goals and 22 assists in 91 appearances.

Szoboszlai offered eight of his assists and six goals in 31 games in each of his two seasons in the Bundesliga. His creativity proved to be worth the wait in Saxony having only made his German top-flight debut eight months after his transfer due to a persistent adductor injury.

Souness thinks Liverpool have a ‘silky’ star in Szoboszlai

Anfield only had to wait four games to see Szoboszlai score his first Liverpool goal in superb style. The 34-cap Hungary skipper gave the Reds the lead against Aston Villa with a clinical volley into the far corner. He ran onto the end of a deep corner to float the ball into the net.

Szoboszlai added a second goal to his account through eight appearances as Liverpool beat Leicester City in the Carabao Cup. His efforts in those games have also impressed Souness, who admires the Szekesfehervar-born creator’s endless desire to drag the play up the field.

“I think the players Liverpool have got in bring a greater technical component, as well as the work ethic,” Souness wrote in his Daily Mail column. “Szoboszlai, the 22-year-old Hungarian, looks silky. He wants to pass the ball forward all the time. I really like the look of him.”

Liverpool will think Szoboszlai can only score screamers after his goal to help beat Leicester at Anfield on Wednesday night. The Hungarian fired the ball into the roof of the Foxes’ net from the edge of the box. It was another clinical effort with pinpoint accuracy and power.

But beyond his sensational scoring abilities, Szoboszlai is showing great desire to burst into the final third. He is also working hard in Klopp’s engine room and has a great ability to find the half-spaces to exploit. The 22-year-old has quickly become central to Klopp’s plans, too.
