Glenn Murray has praised Reiss Nelson and Charles Sagoe Jr for their performances after Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal knocked Brentford out of the EFL Cup.

Whilst Reiss Nelson is a household name to Arsenal fans, the little-less known, Charles Sagoe Jr., isn’t after he made his debut last night.

The 19-year-old was handed a chance to impress in the big time by Mikel Arteta and former Premier League striker, Glenn Murray, highlighted him as a standout performer, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (27/09/23 at 10:05 pm).

As the Arsenal boss has proved time and time again. No matter what your age, he will give you the chance if he thinks you fit the bill.

There could be no better example than Hale-End star Bukayo Saka, now 22, who has been one of his side’s best players since breaking through as a teenager under Unai Emery.

The pathway has always been there for the youngsters, it’s just a case of taking your chance and Charles Sagoe Jr. did himself proud.

Charles Sagoe Jr’s Arsenal debut

On who stood out: “Reiss Nelson and Charles Sagoe, the young man, he did quite well on his debut,” said Murray.

“For me, I think Brentford. They were probably the better team. It was their bad play that gifted Arsenal a goal early on.

“All of sudden, two mistakes, then Reiss Nelson has got a nice shot and he passes it into the back of the net.”

Will Arteta push for the League Cup?

Mikel Arteta made wholesale changes for the Brentford trip, which told the world where the League Cup is on his list of priorities.

But, will he push hard for the League Cup because Arsenal didn’t win a trophy last season, despite the plaudits they got for their performances?

Some would argue that out of all the competitions Arsenal are in, the League Cup is the one they are most likely to win, so why not go hard and play your strongest XI?
