Tino Livramento’s ‘absolutely phenomenal’ performance on his first Newcastle United start helped Eddie Howe’s side knock Premier League champions Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup at the third round stage.

To think, this used to be their competition. Not any more. After winning the EFL Cup four times in a row between 2018 and 2021, Man City have now followed up last season’s shock exit at the hands of Southampton by colliding headlong into the very first hurdle, a spirited, beligerant Newcastle United side triumphing 1-0 in front of a feverish St James’ Park crowd.

Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the tie just after half-time, converting after some superb work from Joelinton.

And, on his full Newcastle debut, the £36 million summer signing Tino Livramento did his hopes of more regular minutes no harm at all, even if Kieran Trippier will take some budging

Tino Livramento shines in Newcastle United win

“Phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal,” former Sunderland, Wolves and West Brom striker Don Goodman said during Sky Sports’ live coverage (27 September, 9.30pm), handing Livramento the Man of the Match award.

“I can’t remember Jack Grealish getting past him.”

Part of a much-changed Newcastle backline – Jamal Lascelles, Paul Dummett and Matt Targett handed rare starts – 20-year-old Livramento was imperious defensively and inspired in attack, shutting down Man City’s £100 million England international while dovetailing beautifully on the overlap.

“The likes of Dummet and Livramento have done remarkably well,” Goodman adds. “Livramento, for your debut against Grealish, absolutely outstanding.

“He’s left it all out there. Absolutely outstanding.”

‘Outstanding’

Newcastle will now face City’s bitter rivals Manchester United in the fourth round. A repeat of last season’s final; Casemiro and Marcus Rashford scoring in a 2-0 win for Erik ten Hag’s side at Wembley.

On last night’s evidence, Livramento has done more than enough to keep his place in the XI for the fourth round tie.

“A very difficult opponent in Jack Grealish, who is an outstanding player,” Howe told Sky at full-time. “I thought defensively (Livramento) was very, very good.”
