Gary Rowett has admitted that he has been left ‘surprised’ by the early impact James Maddison has made at Tottenham Hotspur under Ange Postecoglou.

The England playmaker was a key summer arrival for Tottenham from relegated Leicester City and, inside four Premier League games, he has already contributed four goals or assists.

That’s a very strong early impact from James Maddison and Millwall manager Gary Rowett added that he has ‘come alive’ at Tottenham, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (09/09/23 at 2:10 pm).

From Maddison’s perspective, this seems like the perfect move at the perfect time – Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers recently hailed his former player.

On one hand, in comparison to the previous managers, an attack-minded manager has entered the building in Postecoglou and Spurs have been crying out for a player of Maddison’s ilk.

Plus, the London club want someone to take responsibility and step up after Harry Kane’s exit, which Maddison is doing with ease, so far.

Maddison’s impact at Tottenham

“We have seen the impact Maddison has made,” said Rowett. “Maddison has surprised me a little bit. I knew what a good player he was.

“But he looks like he has come alive. And it looks like they could challenge for the top four.”

Can Maddison hit double figures for Tottenham?

For a relegated Leicester City side, he hit double figures in goals, but Maddison will be backing him to hit those numbers again this season, and not just in goals.

There is no reason why he can’t because Harry Kane might be gone, but from a team’s perspective, it looks like Spurs are going to score a lot more goals by spreading them around.

Plus, Maddison seems to be at the heart of it all, yes, it’s still early days, but the fans seem to be enjoying the football they are watching again.
