Napoli’s new £21 million signing Jesper Lindstrom admits he thought about signing for Liverpool this summer but had concerns over his ‘playing time’ at the Premier League giants.

With Jurgen Klopp and co turning their attention to another Bundesliga playmaker – Dominik Szoboszlai eventually arriving from RB Leipzig as Jesper Lindstrom departed for Napoli – it’s safe to say the disappointment at missing out on the Denmark international has probably been forgotten.

Szoboszlai, masterful again during Sunday’s 3-0 hammering of Aston Villa, is already shaping up to be one of the signings of the summer. We can only guess whether Lindstrom would have made a similarly emphatic impact at Liverpool; the former Brondby whizzkid getting cold feet about joining his boyhood club before putting pen to paper with the Serie A champions in August.

“There was Liverpool. But would I get playing time? Would it be smart to go to Liverpool?,” Lindstrom wonders, speaking to Tipsbladet. “I’m a Liverpool fan, it says so everywhere. So, it would also be an insanely cool experience.

“But if I’m not playing, I might as well sit and watch them on TV for another club. I’m at an age now where I have to play some football.”

Liverpool wanted new Napoli star Jesper Lindstrom

Lindstrom obviously feels he will do exactly that at Liverpool. The versatile attacker joins in a £21 million deal from Eintracht Frankfurt, Napoli turning to Lindstrom after a deal for former Celta Vigo talisman Gabri Veiga collapsed.

“That’s why I think Napoli is a good move. It is a top club in the world. And they have expressed that I will play and I will get a lot of chances,” Lindstrom adds.

“I was of course surprised that (the move) could be done. Because they (Napoli) had expressed that it might not be possible now. But I think it’s cool. I have been looking forward to something happening.”

Lindstrom scored nine goals and set up four more in his final season at Frankfurt in 2022/23.
