Southampton agree deal to sell £15m man with medical planned today

Southampton have reportedly accepted a £3 million bid for Moussa Djenepo with the Championship winger on his way back to Belgium with Standard Liege. 

With Isaac Price and Romain Mundle joining from Everton and Tottenham Hotspur respectively, Standard Liege are making a bit of a name for themselves as a go-to destination for Premier League footballers in need of a loving home. 

Standard are reportedly set to sign Newcastle United’s forgotten man Isaac Hayden today too. Hayden should also be joined at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne by a player who, four years after joining Southampton for a cool £15 million, returns to his former club for a mere fraction of that fee. 

“Moussa Djenepo will once again become a player of Standard Liege,” Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri writes on Twitter. “Agreement reached with the Saints for a final transfer (fee) close to 3.5 million euros.  

“As revealed, this is indeed a 3-year contract.”

Tavolieri adds that Djenepo is already in Paris and bound for Liege. He should undergo a medical before the close of play on Tuesday.

The Mali international struggled to live up to his hefty price tag at St Mary’s, scoring only three league goals in nearly 80 outings. He has not kicked a ball in anger since the appointment of Russell Martin either; Southampton’s willingness to cash in despite the loss of fellow winger Nathan Tella to Bayer Leverkusen particularly telling. 

Martin, meanwhile, is convinced that Southampton have enough firepower at their disposal despite Tella’s exit, with Che Adams staying and Ross Stewart arriving from a Sunderland side who – ironically enough – hammered the Saints 5-0 without their Scottish talisman on Saturday. 

“We have three really capable number nines. Sekou (Mara) can play number nine, Adam Armstrong, Che Adams… ,” Martin says, via the Northern Echo. “So we have some real competition so we don’t need to rush with Ross and make sure, when he does come back (from injury), he can stay fit and get on the pitch for us. 

“I spoke to Ross. He’s really pleased. He loved it up here. I think it suits everyone probably, so I’m really delighted.

“He’s a great lad, a really brilliant character. He’ll help us a lot. We just need to get him fully fit now and get him ready as quickly as possible, he’ll be a really good addition.”
