Anthony Gordon put the Magpies in the lead in the 25th minute.
Netherlands international central defender Virgil van Dijk was sent off just three minutes later.

Darwin Nunez came on as a substitute for Argentina international midfielder Alexis Mac Allister in the 77th minute.
The 24-year-old striker found the back of the net on 81 minutes to make it 1-1.

And then in the third minute of injury time, the Uruguay international striker scored again to win the match for Liverpool.
Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker was following the game, and the BBC Match of the Day presenter was impressed with Nunez.
Lineker has noted that he thinks that Nunez will explode for Liverpool this season, and is happy that he is being proved right.
Nunez has scored two goals in 41 minutes in the Premier League this season.
The 24-year-old striker made 19 starts and 10 substitute appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool last season.
Nunez scored nine goals and gave three assists in those games.
The Uruguayan is a very good striker, and perhaps this season, he will be a real star player for Liverpool and help in the Reds’ quest to win the Premier League title.
