Tottenham Hotspur have analysed Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie but he fancies joining Liverpool this summer.

Piero Hincapie fancies a move to Liverpool but has at least been studied by Tottenham Hotspur.

That is according to CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs, who has been speaking on Last Word on Spurs.

Jacobs was discussing Tottenham’s centre back pursuit and noted that Hincapie is at least on the radar.

Jacobs claims that Tottenham have ‘run the numbers’ and the analytics on Hincapie, studying him for a potential move.

Tottenham aren’t firmly in the race for Hincapie just yet but he could come into the picture if other targets fall by the wayside.

Jacobs intriguingly added that Hincapie would actually like to sign for Liverpool this summer but whilst the Reds have had a look, they’re not 100% convinced.

West Ham United are also considering Hincapie but that move may be a little less likely now Konstantinos Mavropanos has completed his move to East London.

“The last name I would mention on the centre back, even though I think it’s more potentially Liverpool and still very possibly West Ham is Hincapie, who is a left-sided centre back with very high potential, good experience and Tottenham have certainly run the numbers and the data on him,” said Jacobs.

“I don’t think, at this stage, that they have added him to the shortlist but he might be a name to watch as far as moving to the Premier League over the course of the coming weeks. I don’t think it’s accurate at this stage to say that Spurs are in the race or are considering him but what if you miss out on one target? Who do you pivot to or scramble to in the last hours of the window? That’s where you might get some surprises.”

“I’m told that, if it is to be a Premier League club, at the moment, the player would love Liverpool but Liverpool are not necessarily sold and West Ham, who have missed out on Harry Maguire, are still another club to watch,” he added.

What would Tottenham or Liverpool be getting in Piero Hincapie?

We really can’t see Liverpool moving for a defender right now as they’re concentrating their budget on a holding midfielder.

This is maybe one for January or next summer though with Hincapie’s profile making sense for Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been moving infield from the right back spot, as seems to be the popular approach these days.

Neither Andrew Robertson or Kostas Tsimikas are ideal to shift in from left back to form a back three.

Adding somebody can play that hybrid role somewhere between left back and centre back would be valuable for Liverpool.

Hincapie could be that player having played at left back and centre back during his time with Leverkusen.

The Ecuadorian isn’t the most physically-imposing defender at 6ft tall but he is quick and comfortable in possession.

Maybe Tottenham would like to add Hincapie as competition for Micky van de Ven, who recently joined from Wolfsburg.

Splashing decent money on two left-footed centre backs in one window would be a surprise though and we can’t really see a Spurs move right now.

Premier League clubs will be assessing Hincapie but we think he would be more likely to move in 2024 than in the final week of this window.
