John Hartson believes former Celtic star Kieran Tierney is ‘too good’ to be an Arsenal back-up with Premier League rivals Newcastle United a potential destination for the Scotland international.
Earlier this week, Real Sociedad’s president all-but ruled out a move for a player crying out for a fresh start after falling out of favour at one of England’s biggest clubs. But while Donny van de Beek might not be on his way to the Basque region after all, reports suggesting that Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney could still swap North London for San Sebastian before the month is out are refusing to go away.
Tierney wasn’t even in the Arsenal squad for Saturday’s 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

According to The Athletic, Sociedad are keen on striking a loan deal with Arsenal. The Gunners would rather sell, however, and that could play into the hands of a Newcastle or a West Ham; two clubs far more cash rich than La Real.
Newcastle United eye Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney
“After being (at Arsenal) a couple of years, he hasn’t held down a regular place. We all thought he’d go down there and rip the Premier League up,” says Hartson, the Celtic legend speaking about the former Hoops left-back in conversation with Go Radio.
“We know of his talents. But, obviously, (Oleksandr) Zinchenko came from Manchester City. He’s a serial winner. He’s won titles and everything else, he’s a wonderful player. He can play left-back, he drifts into midfield, he’s another outstanding player, Zinchenko.
“I know Kieran can play a number of positions, such as centre-half. But with (William) Saliba and Gabriel there…
“They have some brilliant centre-backs as well, Arsenal.”
According to The Telegraph, Newcastle belief a deal for Tierney could happen, even if Arsenal’s £30 million asking price is a little on the expensive side for a man who only started six Premier League games in 2022/23.

Under Eddie Howe, Tierney would be freed up to do what he does best; flying down the flanks and whipping in crosses from the touchline. At Arsenal, full-backs are expected to drift into midfield rather than hold the width.
“I’m not surprised he’s on the radar of several clubs,” Hartson adds. “In particular a club that are going forward in the world in Newcastle. He’s too good not to be playing every week.
“He was totally out of the fray at the weekend, and wasn’t even a sub. Arsenal went on and won 2-1. I don’t know if he’s injured or had a knock, but maybe that relationship with the manager is not quite there.”
