Dimitar Berbatov says Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea paying £115 million for Moises Caicedo is ‘too much’ after his Liverpool snub.
Both Chelsea and Liverpool put down British record transfer fees for the Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder, but he opted to head to Stamford Bridge instead.
Whilst Berbatov acknowledged that Moises Caicedo is a ‘massive talent’, he thinks that the transfer market is ‘crazy’, as he told Premier League Productions (14/08/23 at 7:35 pm).
Crazy or not, Liverpool and their fans will be kicking themselves that they didn’t manage to sign the 21-year-old.
You can’t really do anything about the transfer market today because near-on every Premier League midfielder, of a decent level, is worth close to £100 million, if not more – West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta could head for big money pretty soon.
Nonetheless, this is what Berbatov said about that £115 Caicedo deal (Sky Sports), with Chelsea beating Liverpool to the race for his signature.

“I think the market is going crazy,” said Berbatov. “How much would Michael Owen cost these days? Golden Ball winner.
“All seriousness, obviously he is a massive talent. He is probably going to be even better for Chelsea in the team that Pochettino is building.
“In my opinion, £100+ million is just too much, at the moment. You ask for this money and someone is going to give it to you. You take it, then sell the player. I think he is going to be a big hit for Chelsea.”

Liverpool needed Caicedo more
On paper, both teams needed the player, but it could be argued that Jurgen Klopp’s side needed him more.
As was proven during their 1-1 draw at Chelsea, they lacked that defensive brain in the middle of the park.
Plus, Chelsea have parted ways with players they no longer want, whilst Fabinho and Jordan Henderson left in an unexpected manner and still haven’t been replaced on Merseyside.
