Former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has tipped Harry Maguire to become West Ham United’s next captain.

West Ham need a new skipper following Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal, while Harry Maguire is closing in on a move to the London Stadium. According to BBC Sport, the Hammers have agreed a £30m deal with United to sign the central defender.

Speaking on talkSPORT about Maguire ahead of his expected switch to David Moyes’ side, Agbonlahor said: “He hasn’t had a good time at Manchester United and he’s become the person to pick on at United.

“So hopefully it goes through for West Ham and it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s made captain and he really gets his career back on track. And it’ll be a great signing for West Ham.”

Maguire was captain at United before being replaced by Bruno Fernandes last month.

David Moyes should consider making Harry Maguire captain

Maguire is a logical candidate for the position. Again, it is a role he held at Old Trafford up until recently, while he is a player with plenty of experience.

The centre-back is now 30 years of age and has played over 50 times for England. Some of those caps have come at major tournaments, such as the 2022 World Cup, so even if he has had a difficult time at United these last couple of seasons, this is no novice.

The most important thing for Maguire, though, is getting onto the football pitch. The Three Lions star missed a lot of games under Erik ten Hag during the 2022/23 campaign.

He will now want to make up for lost time, especially with the Euros coming up next year. Maguire cannot afford to spend another minute on the bench.

Described as a “remarkable guy” by his former manager at Leicester City Brendan Rodgers, Maguire will now be desperate to show that he is also a remarkable footballer at West Ham.
