Gustaf Lagerbielke’s former Vasteras SK coach is backing his £3 million move to Celtic while highlighting a technical ability which should see him thrive under Brendan Rodgers.
Given Celtic’s penchant for dominating proceedings against deep-lying opposition on the domestic stage, any centre-half wearing green-and-white Hoops must be as comfortable with the ball at his feet as he is defending the width of his own penalty area.
Fortunately, Gustaf Lagerbielke doubles up as a solid central defender out of possession and as a deep-lying playmaker in possession.

“We didn’t hesitate to sign him for the start of the 2021 season,” says Kalle Karlsson, Vasteras’ assistant coach during Lagerbielke’s spell at the Swedish outfit (Scottish Sun).
“We saw his game intelligence, how good he was in duels and that he was able to play line-breaking passes with both feet. You don’t see that ability in many players at that level.
“He is strong, quick and very comfortable on the ball. His passing is excellent also. Gustaf was outstanding for us at Vasteras.”
Celtic want Gustaf Lagerbielke
Celtic reportedly submitted a £3 million offer this week.
Lagerbielke will reportedly replace fellow Swede Carl Starfelt; he appears to be on his way to Spain with Celta Vigo. The sporting director of Lagerbielke’s current club – Elfsborg – confirmed Celtic’s ‘interest’ on Tuesday too, though he insists that a deal is not yet imminent.
“He is down to earth, he is a leader. (He is) is likeable in the dressing room, and has a fantastic mentality,” Karlsson adds.
“Gustaf is also a top professional. He trains well and does exactly what the manager asks every time. Whatever is thrown at him, he will handle it.

“It would be nice to see him at Celtic. I am a bit surprised at how quickly he has emerged as one of the best players in the Allsvenskan. It’s been a very fast rise, and now he is wanted by clubs like Celtic.
“Celtic have a certain style of play, and we have had a lot of Swedes who have done very well at the club.
“For me, that helps. There is a lot of history there and I am sure it would be a good move for Gustaf if the deal goes through.”
