TalkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend has suggested that Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez would be a good signing for Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
The former Aston Villa and Chelsea player has said on talkSPORT (4:22pm, August 1, 2023) that Emiliano Martinez is a very good goalkeeper.
Townsend believes that the goalkeeper has grown in stature over the past two seasons.
Football Transfers reported in June that Chelsea are interested in signing Martinez in the summer transfer window.
The report added that new Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino is personally “keen on” the 2022 World Cup winner with Argentina.
The Daily Mail reported on July 31 that Chelsea are now trying to sign Robert Sanchez from Brighton and Hove Albion.
Sanchez reportedly wants to leave the Seagulls this summer.
Townsend said about Martinez and Chelsea: “Emi Martinez at Villa. Obviously became a World Cup winner, and his stature has grown in the game, probably more than any other player in the division, over the last couple of years.

“I think he has become an absolutely very important player for Villa. As I mentioned, a World Cup winner.
“I think he is the sort of goalkeeper that looks to have the personality to go and play for a big club, dare I say, a bigger club than Aston Villa, one that’s winning trophies on a regular basis.
“Chelsea are not that particular team, but I think he is one that could do it.”
Chelsea should bid for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez
In our opinion, Chelsea should make a bid for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the summer transfer window.
The 30-year-old is at the top of his game at the moment and has flourished since his move to Villa from Arsenal in the summer of 2022 for £20 million (The Guardian)
Martinez won the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 Qatar World Cup with Argentina.
The former Arsenal goalkeeper could take his game to another level under Argentine compatriot Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea.
While Robert Sanchez is a good goalkeeper, he cannot even get into the Brighton and Hove Albion starting lineup.
Villa are a big and established club in the Premier League and are unlikely to be willing to sell Martinez this summer, but every player has their price.
