Clinton Morrison has backed Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier to secure a move to a ‘top Premier League club’ amid Chelsea’s rumoured interest.

The 23-year-old suffered relegation with Leeds United last season and was dropped to the bench when Sam Allardyce walked through the doors during the final few weeks.

Former Premier League striker Morrison admitted that Illan Meslier has made ‘a lot of mistakes’, but he still thinks he’s good enough for clubs like Chelsea, as he told Sky Sports.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side sold Edouard Mendy to Saudi Arabia side Al-Ahil this summer, whilst there are doubts over Kepa Arrizabalaga.

As a result, the London club, who finished in the bottom half last season, have expressed interest in Leeds’ man between the sticks.

Would you call Meslier the club’s number one given that he was sitting on the bench for their last competitive game? Well, either way, Morrison thinks he is still worthy of a return to the promised land.

“I probably would (take him if I was a top Premier League manager) because he is young,” said Morrison. “He has made a lot of mistakes for Leeds, but he is a young goalkeeper.

“He has now had the experience of playing in the Premier League. I would definitely take him because he is only going to improve.

“Goalkeeper is one of the hardest positions. You can mistake anywhere else, you don’t get punished. You make a mistake in goal, then you get punished.”

Chelsea should stay away from Meslier

If Chelsea fans want to see the back of Kepa given his struggles and own error-prone performances, then someone like Meslier isn’t the answer.

His form and confidence have been well and truly shot. Yes, he needs to leave Elland Road, but not for the Premier League.

Meslier is probably better off returning to France, rebuilding himself again, because he is no longer worthy of being Leeds’ number one, never mind Chelsea’s.
