Clinton Morrison says Manchester United defender Harry Maguire ‘has to move’ this summer amid transfer interest from Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.

The 30-year-old is at a crossroads in his career. A bench player at Manchester United and now no longer the captain, this next month is huge in his career.

If Harry Maguire does leave Old Trafford, then there are a host of clubs keen to take him on board, including Tottenham who are in need of centre-backs.

Despite the verbal beating the hard-hitting centre-back has taken in recent times from fans and the media, Morrison still thinks he is an ‘outstanding’ player, as he told Sky Sports.

Once upon a time, you could have put that label on him, but not anymore. He has rightfully been benched by Erik ten Hag and needs to be shown the door.

This is just a case of whether the player is willing to go himself, because if he does, then Morrison feels ‘a lot of Premier League teams’ would want him.

“He has to move, for his own sake,” said Morrison. “No-one likes to leave Man United. You are always told ‘stay at the best clubs’.

“They are the best club in the world. Well, when I was playing, they were the best club in the world. You walk up the motorway to sign for that club. I still think they are a huge football club. Their fanbase is fantastic.

“The problem you have with Harry Maguire. His England career is on the line here – I don’t see him playing much at Man United – it’s best he moves on.

“He can go to a lot of Premier League teams. I think he still has a lot to offer. He’s an outstanding centre-half.”

What is Harry Maguire’s level?

Does the England centre-half deserve to join another team in Europe if he leaves? West Ham United have expressed interest in him, so perhaps he does.

But if he doesn’t, then he needs to look abroad or to teams outside of the Premier League’s top seven.

That’s where Spurs come into it, but they have been woeful for many, many years at the back now and the last thing their fans want to see is Maguire and Eric Dier at the heart of their defence.
