Premier League trio Everton, Wovles and Newcastle United have now officially missed out on Viktor Gyokeres with the former Coventry City striker sealing a £20 million move to Sporting Lisbon.
After a couple of prolific seasons in the second tier – Viktor Gyokeres fired Coventry to the play-off final last term while scoring 23 goals along the way – even the most optimistic Sky Blue supporters would have accepted long ago that the Sweden international was likely to be on the move this summer.
But those predicting a move to the Premier League would have been taken aback when Gyokeres opted for a new start in a new country, the former Swansea City and Brighton youngster becoming the most expensive signing in Sporting Lisbon’s history for a cool £20 million.

“After a long discussion, we have finally concluded a deal that is right for all parties concerned. (We can) confirm the transfer of Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting Lisbon,” Coventry’s executive chairman Doug King explains.
“Viktor has made a huge impression in his time with us and leaves many great memories. We wish him every success with his new club.
“This is a record transfer fee for Coventry City.”

The Sky Blues, at least, have a replacement in the bag already. Ellis Simms, impressive on loan at Sunderland during the first half of last term, joins from Everton.

Gyokeres, according to TEAMtalk, turned down the chance to join Sean Dyche’s side as part of a player-plus-cash swap deal, while Wolves’ Financial Fair Play issues quickly put pay to their hopes of bringing in a forward Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray likened to Erling Haaland due to his fearsome finishing and his burly frame.
The Daily Mail, meanwhile, say that there was interest from Newcastle United too.
Mick Tait, a scout for the St James’ Park outfit, reportedly watched Gyokeres in action last season.
