Wolves have opened talks with centre-back Max Kilman about potentially signing a new long-term contract at Molineux.

This news comes as Wolves have rejected Napoli’s £30 million offer for the Englishman. The Telegraph claim that whilst financial fair play remains an issue for Julen Lopetegui’s side, it is thought that Wolves are reluctant to sell and are keen to gauge his interest in signing a new contract.

Kilman has been a superb defender this season for Wolverhampton and has been linked throughout the season with moves to the Premier League’s top six, with Tottenham, according to a recent report from Tutto Mercato Web, exploring the possibility of signing the defender for a fee in the region of £30 million.

Kim-Min Jae replacement found by Napoli

With the recent news, reported by Fabrizio Romano, relating to the impending move of the Korean defender to German champions, Bayern Munich, the Italian champions need a replacement, and Kilman seemingly fits that bill.

It’s hard to disagree with the decision-makers at Napoli over the qualities of the Englishman. According to FBREF, Kilman ranks highly in blocks, aerial duels, and clearances. For the fee reported, believed to be £35 million to £40 million, it would be a great bit of business for Napoli ahead of the new season, amid another push for the Serie A title.

For Wolves, it would be a bitter blow to lose a player of Kilman’s quality, hence the commencing of talks over a new contract, but bringing in a decent pot of cash will not only help the financial fair play issues but Wolves will also be able to address other holes in the squad.

Following the departure of Ruben Neves to Saudi Arabia – the money for Kilman gives Lopotegui and Wolves a bit more wiggle room in the summer transfer market. A combined fee of around £80 million for the pair would represent great business from the Midlands outfit.

If Kilman were to put pen to paper on a new contract, this would also be great news for Wolves as replacing the quality that the 26-year-old brings will be no easy feat.
