Ray Parlour says Tottenham Hotspur’s signing of playmaker James Maddison from Leicester City is an ‘absolute steal’.

The 2022/23 Premier League campaign was one to forget for James Maddison because of Leicester’s relegation and it didn’t help matters when Tottenham knocked on their door for their best player.

It means that the Midlands side had to sell the 26-year-old for a cut-price deal, with Daniel Levy securing a £40 million deal for the player and Parlour calling it a ‘great signing’, as he told talkSPORT.

It ends the club’s long wait to sign a playmaker and someone that can fill the role Christian Eriksen left many years ago.

To think that the Denmark international has gone to Inter, won the title, suffered a near-death experience, joined Brentford, then signed for Man United and won a trophy before Spurs could replace him is pretty embarrassing, to be honest.

But better late than ever and Ange Postecoglou should look forward to working with a man of Maddison’s talents, as Parlour certainly likes the club’s transfer call.

“He’s a great signing,” said Parlour. “£40 million, that’s an absolute steal.

“Whether Harry Kane would look at that and say ‘I might get a few more chances next year with him playing behind me’. Bentancur was a bit unlucky last year in central midfield (with his injury). He was becoming a decent player for Spurs.”

Maddison and Kane

If Harry Kane stays at Tottenham beyond the summer, then it will really help Maddison, who was dubbed a ‘very rare’ player by Danny Murphy, to settle into his new home.

Kane has already produced a record-breaking partnership with Son Heung-min over the years and you would imagine that he could go down the same road with Maddison.

Added to that, it might just help Tottenham’s new man on the international stage because he is yet to cement a starting spot under Gareth Southgate.
