Liverpool are moving in for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia having allegedly overtaken Chelsea in the race for his signature.

Liverpool are now preparing a first offer for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia as they seek another midfield addition.

That is according to TalkSPORT, who claim that Liverpool are now ‘preparing an opening offer’ to sign Lavia.

It’s stated that Liverpool have now moved ahead of Chelsea in the race to sign Lavia and now appear to be favourites.

Southampton want around £50million for Lavia, commanding a huge fee for the Belgian despite suffering relegation.

Liverpool splashed huge cash on a new midfield addition on Sunday, completing the signing of RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai in a £60million move.

Add that to the outlay for Alexis Mac Allister earlier this summer and Liverpool are committing big money to their midfield overhaul.

Lavia would be another hefty signing but he could be the future of the Liverpool midfield alongside Mac Allister and Szoboszlai.

Liverpool could annoy Manchester City with Romeo Lavia deal

Southampton may have gone down but Lavia showed his potential with the Saints, highlighting why Manchester City like him so much.

City agreed to sell Lavia last summer but do have a buy-back clause in the deal – which can only be activated in 2024.

That means Liverpool may now be in a position to swoop in and sign Lavia now whilst City focus elsewhere with a move for RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

City don’t seem to be moving in for Lavia this summer and may not fancy paying more than their buy-back clause anyway.

Seeing Lavia join Liverpool would sting though, especially given the rivalry between the two clubs in recent years.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have been battling it out for years now, with City no doubt aware that one dormant Liverpool season can lead to an eruption the next.

Lavia could be part of Liverpool’s future now, just weeks after Guardiola admitted in April that he and City think the youngster is ‘incredible’.

Lavia could be the heir to Fabinho at the base of Liverpool’s midfield and ultimately be relied upon to help the Reds win midfield battles against City for years to come.
