Alasdair Gold has shared that Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is closing in on a move to Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur.

The Tottenham transfer expert added that there is ‘talk of a medical’, which could take place today (Sunday), as the long-term successor for Hugo Lloris has been found.

This has been a long time coming for Spurs fans, as Gold also stated that Guglielmo Vicario has been getting ‘rave reviews’ for the past two seasons in Serie A, as he told his own YouTube channel.

It does seem as though Spurs haven’t got their first-choice transfer target because that was Brentford’s number one, David Raya.

But, when it comes to Daniel Levy, if he can save a fiver, then he will, as that deal fell flat on its face and now Vicario is heading to Hotspur Way.

At 26, Vicario has enough experience to step into the Premier League limelight, as well as still take his game to the next level, which was touched upon by Gold.

“Talking about transfers,” said Gold. “We are about to have the first new face, obviously, Dejan Kulusevski was signed up permanently from his loan deal from Juventus, but a new face coming in and that is Guglielmo Vicario.

“Looks like that deal is heading towards its conclusion now. It’s reportedly €19m, which is £16 million. There is talk that the medical will be this weekend. Possibly Sunday. All of that will get tied up and then Spurs will have their long-term successor to Hugo Lloris.

“Vicario, if you aren’t aware, he is getting rave reviews in Serie A this season and also last season. Only 26. He hasn’t hit his prime as a keeper yet.

“What you need to factor in for a Postecoglou goalkeeper is that it needs to be someone who is very good at saving shots, but they also need to be able to move that ball quickly. Building up possession from the back very quickly – not one for long kicks or diagonal balls, just very much recycle possession in the relentless nature of ‘we never stop Postecoglou Moto’.”

Vicario needs reliable defence in front of him

Given the troubles Lloris has faced in recent seasons, the spotlight will firmly be on Tottenham’s new man from the get-go.

But he is going to need some help from a defence that was all over the shop last season.

If there is that reliability in front of the Italian, then it will allow him to settle in and showcase his ability to play out from the back in a pressure-free manner.
