Ray Parlour says Leicester City star James Maddison would make a ‘bigger impact’ at Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur than at Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.

Both clubs are keen on signing the 26-year-old this summer, with the 2023 transfer window officially opening on Wednesday and mixed transfer reports coming out about Maddison’s future.

Newcastle United have Champions League football to offer, whereas Tottenham aren’t in Europe at all, but for Parlour, he thinks Spurs need James Maddison ‘badly’ and Eddie Howe’s midfield is ‘a lot stronger’, as he told talkSPORT (13/06/23 at 6:50 am).

A player who scored 10 Premier League goals for relegated Leicester, wherever Maddison moves, he will elevate that side’s midfield and bring in a lot of excitement.

That’s why he is attracting so much interest, but it seems as though a £60 million price-tag has been put on his head and it wouldn’t be a surprise if that’s off-putting for interested parties, especially for a certain Daniel Levy.

Nonetheless, when discussing Maddison’s future, Parlour explained why he would make the ball talk more at Hotspur Way than at St James’ Park.

“Newcastle have got more players in that position if I am being honest,” said Parlour.

“But they (Spurs) are crying out for an attacking midfielder. They have got Hojbjerg. They have got Skipp. They are very good players and hard working.  But they just need someone who is a ball player, badly.

“I would say Maddison would make a bigger impact at Spurs, wouldn’t he, than Newcastle? Newcastle’s midfield is a lot stronger. Spurs are dying out for a player like Maddison.”

 Maddison would thrive at Tottenham

The England international seems like a big spotlight player and someone who loves the pressure. He would showcase bravery on the ball, forward-thinking ability and some much-needed spice in the final third.

It also needs to be noted that new boss Ange Postecoglou is going to try and change the club’s style of play, so a player of Maddison’s ilk, who was dubbed ‘very rare’ by Danny Murphy, would certainly help him along his way.

All of this now comes down to how far is Levy willing to push the boat out, and let’s be honest, he hasn’t previously been keen to throw big-money at players.
