Don Hutchison has called Liverpool’s transfer move for Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Hove Albion as ‘very smart’.
Liverpool announced Alexis Mac Allister as their first signing of the 2023 summer transfer window on Thursday – it has been suggested that he has cost an initial £35 million.
Given that the 24-year-old is a World Cup winner and he also guided Brighton to Europe for the first time in their history, then Hutchison thinks that it’s a ‘cheap’ deal for a player with ‘a lot of quality’, as he told ESPN.

Even dating back to this time last season, when the Reds missed out on winning all four major trophies, it was obvious that fresh legs and quality was needed in the middle of the park.
But, for one reason or another, Jurgen Klopp and Co. decided against making major moves in the market, and instead, they secured a very late loan deal for Arthur Melo from Juventus, which proved to be a disaster.
Well, Liverpool are making sure that they don’t make such mistakes again, with Mac Allister already through their doors before the 2023 summer transfer window can officially open and Hutchison is delighted by that call.
“I mean, it’s cheap, that was my initial reaction,” said Hutchison. “It’s £35m going on £15 or 20m more, depending on what he wins.
“But he is bringing a lot of quality to Liverpool, that’s for sure. I think Liverpool are trying to get their signings in early and ready for pre-season in a few weeks’ time.
“They are bringing in a midfield player that has already scored more goals than the whole of Liverpool’s midfield last season, so I think it’s a very smart move.”

What will Mac Allister bring to Liverpool?
Liverpool’s previous title and Champions League-winning midfield had energy, bravery on the ball, quick-thinking ability and they would make the opposition suffocate.
That would allow the dynamic front three and the creative fullbacks to sing and dance as much as they like.
That went out of the window this season and Mac Allister will bring some of that back, as well as the ability to score goals, including from set-piece situations.
