Newcastle United have been trying to sign Kalvin Phillips but have been left frustrated in their pursuit.

Kalvin Phillips seemingly wants to stay at Manchester City having ignored overtures from Newcastle United.

That is according to The Telegraph, who claim that Newcastle have been chasing Phillips for weeks now.

Newcastle were initially informed that Phillips would be available for transfer and they decided to chase a deal.

However, Newcastle have been left frustrated with the noises coming from Phillips and his representatives.

It’s suggested that Phillips has now decided that he doesn’t want to leave City this summer and wants to prove himself under Pep Guardiola.

Phillips completed a huge £42million move to City last summer, leaving Leeds United for the Premier League champions.

Many backed Phillips to shine at the Etihad Stadium but that just hasn’t happened.

The 27-year-old has only managed two Premier League starts for City this season and 291 league minutes in total.

Rodri’s importance to the City side was immeasurable and meant Phillips had to spend most of the season on the bench.

Kalvin Phillips may think he can bounce back like Jack Grealish

There are certainly some parallels to Grealish here.

Grealish left Aston Villa to join City in a huge deal but failed to live up to the price tag in his first season.

The England international has really kicked on this season though, proving that it just takes time to fully settle into Pep Guardiola’s ways.

Phillips may well believe that he can enjoy a similar rise next season, backing himself to shine under Guardiola.

That leaves Newcastle to look elsewhere for a new midfielder, with a host of other targets on their radar as the option of signing Phillips fades away.
