Former Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic defender Ramon Vega expects to see Ange Postecoglou turn down the Premier League giants in favour of another season at the Scottish champions.

While clearly not Daniel Levy’s first choice to replace Antonio Conte – Spurs appear to be turning towards the 57-year-old Austrian only after being frustrated in their efforts to bring in Julian Nagelsmann, Xabi Alonso and now Arne Slot – Ange Postecoglou certainly ticks a lot of boxes (The Independent).

Tottenham chairman Levy, back in 2021, claimed to want a coach ‘whose values reflect those of our great club. Playing football with the style for which we are known – free-flowing, attacking and entertaining – whilst continuing to embrace our desire to see young players flourish from our Academy’ (Sky Sports).

Postecoglou, then, may the right man at the right time. His Celtic team play some of the most enthralling, possession-based football around. Postecoglou’s two-year spell at Parkhead, meanwhile, has coincided with a number of players reaching heights few thought them capable of.

What’s more, a second successive Scottish Premiership title took the Australian’s personal trophy haul to a round 20.

Will Ange Postecoglou leave Celtic for Tottenham Hotspur?

If Tottenham want a manager capable of playing forward-thinking football with a host of exciting youngsters, while bringing an end to their long trophy drought, then there’s arguably few better.

“He’s a top manager,” Vega, who enjoyed a spell on loan at Celtic from Spurs in 2001, tells Sky. “At my ex-club Celtic, he has done a fantastic job.”

The Hoops have secured qualification for the Champions League group-stages by winning yet another top-flight title. Tottenham, meanwhile, are facing up to a season without any form of European football; eighth place and a point behind Aston Villa heading into the final day.

And that, Vega adds, could be a key factor in Postecoglou deciding that the grass is not always greener south of Hadrian’s Wall.

“I doubt he’ll leave Celtic now,” predicts the former Switzerland international. “Especially when they are in the Champions League.

“Without question, he has done a fantastic job for Celtic Football Club.”
