Arsenal bringing in both Declan Rice and Ilkay Gundogan from Premier League rivals West Ham United and Manchester City would be beyond the ‘wildest dreams’ of Gunners fans.

That is according to Ally McCoist; the Rangers legend speaking on talkSPORT as Arsenal step up their summer plans in an attempt to go one step further than second place in 2023/23.

Declan Rice, despite his £100 million price-tag, remains the Gunners’ number one target. According to The Athletic, meanwhile, Mikel Arteta is also hot on the heels of Gundogan; a 32-year-old who’s title-winning nous and remarkable penchant for ‘clutch’ moments could come in very handy indeed for an Arsenal side who’s lack of winning experience arguably cost them dear in an enthralling Premier League title race.

Can Arsenal sign both Declan Rice and Ilkay Gundogan?

“Gundogan has been tremendous,” McCoist says. “Without a doubt, if you get him on a free and Declan Rice, that would be beyond your wildest dreams.

“If you’re going to compete on all fronts – Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham will be better (next term) – its such an important summer.”

Gundogan’s Man City contract expires in July. And McCoist believes that, while Barcelona are also interested, the chance to take on a leadership role at a young and exciting Arsenal side may be one that appeals to the stylish Germany international.

“He will look at Arsenal; the progress they’ve made, the youth in the team,” McCoist adds. “I think there is more attraction to Arsenal moving forward than perhaps a lot of sides.”

Gundogan has scored eight Premier League goals under Pep Guardiola in 2022/23. Half of those have come in his last two outings, however, the former Borussia Dortmund playmaker following up his brace against Leeds United with a stunning double away at Everton, a performance capped by a wonderful touch and volley reminiscent of Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp in his pomp.
