Tottenham have now been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of Xabi Alonso as the search for Antonio Conte’s replacement drags on.
According to De Telegraaf in the Netherlands, the Spaniard is Daniel Levy’s No.1 target.
Now – however – Tottenham will have to find alternatives to Xabi Alonso.
What’s the story?
Well, the 41-year-old has now addressed his future, and it is not good news for Tottenham.
As quoted by Sport1 in Germany, Alonso said: “Yes, I’m going to stay at Bayer Leverkusen. I’m very happy at this club and with this team.”
After The Athletic claimed that Julian Nagelsmann is also out of the running to replace Conte at Tottenham, it remains to be seen where Spurs go from here.
Alonso would have been a very exciting appointment, having made a name for himself this season by taking Bayer Leverkusen from 17th to seventh in the Bundesliga, while also reaching the UEFA Europa League Semi-Final.
Unfortunately for Levy, he will have to look elsewhere.
Who Tottenham could hire instead of Xabi Alonso
The options are running out for Spurs.
There was interest in hiring Vincent Kompany – according to the Daily Mail – although the Belgian has recently signed a new contract at Burnley.
Mauricio Pochettino was also said to be in contention, but the Argentine is heading to Chelsea.

As things stand, it seems the favourite to replace Conte is Oliver Glasner, who has already announced he is leaving Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of the season – Football Transfers believe Levy has personally held talks with the Austrian.
Arne Slot of Feyenoord is another who could take over in N17 – according to The Times – but the Dutchman is also of interest to West Ham and Crystal Palace.
Be sure to keep an eye on the situation, as Tottenham are expected to hire a new manager soon.
