Will the new The Little Mermaid be on Disney Plus and in theaters? HITC explains.
There is a generation of kids—now adults—who grew up obsessed with Ariel, endlessly rewinding VHS copies of The Little Mermaid and singing along to the infectious songs whenever given a chance. It’s a Disney classic, but it’s time for the 1989 animated movie to receive a live-action makeover in director Robb Marshall’s star-studded reimagining.
The studio has revamped many of its most beloved films in recent years, breathing new life into them for a new generation to cherish. This time around, it’s Halle Bailey’s turn to showcase her talents in the titular role, and she’s in great company, with Javier Bardem, Melissa McCarthy, and others in the cast.
There are plenty of reasons to check it out, but will the new The Little Mermaid be on Disney Plus and in theaters?

Will new The Little Mermaid be on Disney Plus and in theaters?
The Little Mermaid opens in theaters on Friday, May 26th, 2023, but it will not receive a simultaneous release on Disney Plus. With that in mind, the cinema is the place to be for those eager to see the blockbuster on its initial release. For those who are willing to wait, it tends to take roughly three months after the theatrical window closes for new movies to reach Disney.
Taking this into consideration, we predict The Little Mermaid will be available on the platform as part of your subscription in early September 2023.
The Little Mermaid tickets are now available to book online.

‘It’s a lot more modern’
‘If we already have the old movie then why do we need the new one?’ It’s perhaps a cynical question, but it’s one that’s already been asked a bunch.
Well, Halle recently sat down with The Face and acknowledged what separates this latest take from the previous:
“What’s beautiful about this version of The Little Mermaid is that it’s a lot more modern…When we saw it, when we were younger, she gave up everything for the guy. But I don’t think [that] reflects modern women today.”
She continued: “So [now] it’s more about Ariel finding freedom for herself because of this world that she’s obsessed with.”
