Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has said that he wants Paul Dummett to stay at the club.

Dummett is out of contract at Newcastle at the end of the season, and, as quoted by The Chronicle, Howe has made it abundantly clear that he wants the 31-year-old defender in his team next campaign as well.

The Newcastle boss has publicly sent a message to club owners Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) about the future of the Welshman, who has been on the books of the Magpies all his career.

Eddie Howe wants new Newcastle United contract for Paul Dummett

Howe said about Dummett: “Very much so (he could stay). I see Paul as part of our future.

“When you build a squad you are never going to be able to play everybody for the amount of time they want to. So you need players who are prepared to fight for their place, train well and have an effect on the group.

“Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett, they are players who have not performed for the outside world, but internally they have been excellent for us.”

Tricky situation

Now, while Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe clearly wants Paul Dummett in his squad for next season, there is a big decision to be made from the player and from PIF.

Wouldn’t PIF be better off just letting the Welshman go and signing a better and younger defender in his place?

And Dummett may not be too keen on staying at Newcastle if he does not get to play regularly.

According to The Chronicle, the 31-year-old has been fully since the season resumed after the 2022 Qatar World Cup finals.

However, the defender is not able to get much playing time.

Dummett has not played a single game in the Premier League this season.

The defender made two starts and one substitute appearance in the league last season.
